The chronicles of Dora Mattei - The sixteenth card
Rome. On
the night of November 10–11, 1953, journalist Dora Mattei is awakened by a
violent thunderstorm that flings open the shutters of her bedroom window,
forcing her out of bed. As she goes to close them, she notices a faint light
glowing in the distance and, beneath the crash of thunder, hears a scream. A
moment later, the light is gone, and all that remains is the low rumble of the
storm.
Dora decides to leave the house and, driving her burgundy
Fiat Topolino, heads towards a spot beyond the Church of Santa Maria della
Scala, where she believes the briefly illuminated window might be—the very
window from which the cry may have come. On the cobblestones of Via Benedetta,
she finds a young woman with long red hair who, tragically, dies soon
afterwards. But not before clasping Dora’s hand and uttering one final,
mysterious word: “Sibilla.”
Once again, Inspector Bruno Donati finds Dora already at the
scene of what, for the moment, appears to be either a tragic accident or a
suicide.
Meanwhile, from an open window comes the meow of a beautiful
white cat, appearing in the flashes of lightning only to vanish into the
darkness each time.
